Spring 1931 was a time for celebration in Birmingham, when its airport opened and hosted a major air show, attracting huge crowds. The terminal building in use today was built in 1972 and features 20 gates and different floors for both arrivals and departures. In 1986, the Birmingham Airport Authority was formed to manage the airport and has overseen many improvements over the years, including an upgrade of the terminal in 1993, costing around $50 million. Birmingham International Airport (BHM) is currently extending and improving the terminal once more, along with the Air Cargo Complex, and the cost of this work is expected to exceed $180 million.
Available amenities at Birmingham International Airport include an information desk with paging services, wireless Internet connectivity, cashpoints operated by both Wachovia and AmSouth Bank, and a Skycaps service, for departing passengers needing assistance. Also onsite is an Airport Business Center, which features laptop workstations and is located on the upper levels and open Monday through Sunday.
